Questions
Define the words “skyscraper” and “landmark”. Write down the names of two other famous landmark skyscrapers.
  1. Building the Empire State Building was part of a “race”. What was it a race for? Who was competing? (What’s the interesting, ironic meaning in that this was a “race”?)
  2. What holds up the Empire State Building? (What is it made of?)
  3. How old is the Empire State Building? (Hint: subtract)
  4. Tell two amazing facts about the Empire State Building.
  5. Activities
Research the history of another famous landmark. Draw, or get a picture of it and list five interesting facts about this landmark. (A bulletin board of students’ landmark information can be displayed.)
    1. See how many movies you can find that have the Empire State Building in them. Watch one of them and tell your class how the building was important to the movie.
    2. Look at pictures of some landmark skyscrapers. See what makes each of them special. (i.e.: The Chrysler Building, The Space Needle, or the Eiffel Tower) Then design your own skyscraper, (you can draw it or build a small version of it) and put it on display in your classroom.
